ALPHA (Assessing Levels of Physical Activity)

A National Youth Fitness Initiative

This is a fitness program that includes a health-related assessment, as well as educational and motivational tools, to support educators and empower students to adopt an active lifestyle

Physical fitness is made up of five parts

  1. Cardiovascular Endurance
  2. Muscular Strength
  3. Muscular Endurance
  4. Body Composition
  5. Flexibility

The program is a multi-component approach by which schools use all opportunities for students to be physically active, meet the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime. It reflects strong coordination and synergy across all of the components:

  • quality physical education as the foundation
  • physical activity before, during, and after school
  • staff involvement, and family and community engagement
